This is general help, not legal or money advice. Not sure? Call or text 211 (free, any language, 24/7).
💡 1. Power, gas or water bill
- Look for "amount due" and "due date." They are on page 1, but the spot changes by company.
- Pay by the due date.
- Can't pay? Call the company on the bill before the due date. Ask for a payment plan.
- Got a "disconnection" letter? Call them today.
- Free help: Utilities Consumer Advocate, 310-4822.
🧾 2. CRA Notice of Assessment (tax letter)
- It shows your tax result: a refund, an amount you owe, or "Balance: Nil" (nothing).
- Refund: you don't need to pay. CRA sends it by bank deposit or cheque.
- You owe: pay by the date on the letter. Can't pay all? Call CRA 1-800-959-8281 to pay over time.
- Think it's wrong? You have 90 days to ask CRA to look again.
- CRA never asks you to pay with gift cards, prepaid cards or crypto (like bitcoin). CRA never threatens arrest. That is a scam.
🏥 3. Alberta Health Care (AHCIP) letter
- It is about your Alberta health care coverage.
- Card has an end date (often for work or study permits)? Your coverage stops on that date. Before then, take your new permit to a registry agent.
- Moved, married, or had a baby? Update your info at a registry agent.
- Questions: AHCIP 780-427-1432 (toll-free: dial 310-0000 first).
🏠 4. Rent or lease letter
- It may be a rent increase or a notice to move out. Find the new rent and start date, or the move-out date.
- Rent can go up only once every 365 days, and not during a fixed-term lease. Month-to-month: you must get 3 full months' notice, in writing, signed and dated. (There is no limit on how much.)
- Notice for unpaid rent: at least 14 clear days. If you pay all the rent you owe before the end date, you can stay.
- Don't ignore it. Get help before the date: call 211, or the Alberta landlord-tenant line 1-877-427-4088.
🚗 5. Traffic or parking ticket
- Find the fine and the "respond by" or court date.
- Before that date: pay, ask for more time to pay, or follow the steps to fight it.
- Provincial tickets: Traffic Tickets Service online, or call 1-855-738-4747. City parking or bylaw tickets: follow the steps on the ticket.
- Miss the date? You pay a late fee, and a registry won't renew your licence or plates until it's paid. Some tickets say you must go to court. Missing that can lead to an arrest warrant.
- Roadside SafeRoads notice (impaired driving)? You have only 7 days to ask for a review.
